The
African Junior Tennis Championship (AJTC) Qualifiers ended yesterday at
the tennis court of the Abuja National Stadium, with Team Nigeria
wining the trophy.
Nigeria
also topped the table with 13 medals which included seven gold, five
silver and two bronze medals from the two legs of the qualifiers. Togo
and Mali came in second and third place respectively.
Elizabeth
Garos Pam set the country on course for a spectacular finish at the
eight-nation event when she defeated Marie Ange Sia of Cote d'Ivoire
6-4, 6-2 in the Girls' U-16, while Sylvester Emmanuel took beating
Michael Michael for the Boys' title.
The
Vice President of the Confederation of African Tennis (CAT), Mohammed
Omar Traore, commended Nigeria for its organisation of the week-long
championship, which serves as the qualifiers for the AJTC which will be
held in Kenya in March.
The
Nigerian Tennis Federation President, Sani Ndanusa, commended the
sportsmanship exhibited by all the countries that participated in the
qualifiers, pledging the federation's commitment to developing the game.
