Update on May 1 Nyanya Blast

The Nigerian Police has confirmed the death of 19 persons from the bomb explosion in Nyanya, Abuja, last evening.

This was revealed on the police’s Twitter handle, @policeng, this afternoon. It said 66 persons injured in the attack were taken to the hospital, six of which have been treated and discharged. It added that investigation into the explosion has commenced.

In the meantime, Presidential spokesman, Mr Rueben Abati, announced on his Twitter handle that President Goodluck Jonathan Fridayafternoon summoned security chiefs to a special security meeting at the Villa, following the bomb explosion in Nyanya.

Meanwhile, the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has once again called on Nigerians to donate blood to the victims of the blast receiving treatment at the Asokoro District Hospital, the National Hospital, and the Maitama General Hospital.

similarly, the FCT Minister, Senator Bala Mohammed, who visited victims at the Asokoro District Hospital last night directed that all victims of the blast be given free treatment and food.

It would be recalled that the bomb exploded Thursday night at about 8:30 p.m. in Nyanya, just across the motor park were a similar explosion occurred on April 14, killing 75 people. At the time of filing this report, the scene of the incidence had been cordoned off.
